A number of prisoners from the barracks came into theFort-yard, this morning, to get water, and to remove some bed-ding. Several of them croM^ding into a rece&s, out of sight ofthe sentinels, we soon found that the poor fellows were suffer-ing for food, and two or three of our party threw them some-thing to eat. The supply of bread, in all the rooms, seemedtolerably full, and we succeeded in getting a dozen or moreloaves, which were thrown out to the sufferers in halves andquarters. It distressed me, to see the eagerness with whichthey threw up their hands, to catch at every piece. Somewho got more than their share, crammed the scraps hastilyinto their dirty pockets, or hid them in their shirt bosoms.After we had no more to give them, some still waited, anx-iously, for a morsel.
