DURESS BY FEDERAL AUTHORITY. 11 I must give Capt. Ellison credit for his delicate, and gen-tlemanly bearing. He left me, for some hours, without aguard ; held an umbrella over me, as I stepped upon the cars;looked after my baggage whilst I attended to my Avife andlittle one; and, on our arrival at Delaware City, he volun-teered to hunt up Mrs. Handys brother, and then left us atthe hotel, on parole: making only some suggestions which,considering his official i^osition, were not improper. Tuesday, 21st.—Had a pretty comfortable rest last night;and at half-past eight, this morning, was severed from my wifeand child, to appear before the commanding officer at FortDelaware. Crossed over to the island ^ in a small steamer, incharge of Capt. Ellison, who still seemed respectful and atten-tive. At the Delaware City wharf, observed a number of oldacquaintances — some of whom appeared to be glad to see me,wdiilst others were evidently shy, and afraid, or unwilling tooffer a salutation. It
