are Captains Gordon, Dye, Dunkle,G. L. Roberts, and Mackey. Encouraging news from Petersburg. Saturday, IQth.— Still sick and prostrate. In much suffer-ing, took the long journey in the night. Others weretravelling all the time. Sometimes the men are picked up onthe route. Others crawl, to and fro, or fall by the wayside,wishing for day. What a shame to humanity ! O, the hor-rors of this dreadful prison ! My throat is somewhat better; but I am so much out oforder in this, and other respects, that I can only leave mybunk, for a few remarks at the noon-day meeting. I fear Ishall have to go to the hospital. Would greatly j)refer aparole, could it be obtained, to spend a few days under thecareful nursing of my wife. Think I shall venture a petitionto that effect, as Gen. Schoepf once offered to send me acrossthe river under guard. Others have been permitted to leavethe island, for a short time, on parole. I really dont knowwhat to do. All this is the result of confinement, irregularity
